Max Schuett’s Story: “We came here in 1946. We bought the place (formerly Jimmy the Greek’s “The Midway”) in 1947. Been here ever since.” — Max Schuett (from Monticello Past and Present book, published in 1977). Max Schuett was born Aug. 21, 1914 in Iowa, the son of Arthur and Ella (Naeve) Schuett. He graduated in 1931 from New Glarus High School. He married Mavis M. Blum on Nov. 26, 1936 in Monticello. Mavis passed away in 1976. Following their marriage, they made their home in Chicago for 10 years before returning to Monticello. Max was a diesel locomotive machinist in Chicago. He was looking for a reason to get out of that line of work which he described as “dirty and hard.” In Monticello, Max and Mavis, along with their son, Ron, operated the M&M Cafe. Max retired in 1989 and died in 1998. For more local history, visit www.monticellohistoricalsociety.org. - Photo supplied by the Monticello Area Historical Society
