The first Cheese Day Oct. 28, 1914.
Local citizens were impressed by the Sauerkraut Festival they attended in Forreston, Illinois, earlier in October and from that, Cheese Days was born. Cheese Days became a two-day celebration in 1965 and expanded to a three-day event in 1986. It has been held in the even-numbered years since 1970.
This picture was taken from the Monroe Area Pictorial History, which is for sale at the Green County Historical Society Museum, along with other historical publications. The Museum will be open daily over the Cheese Days weekend: Friday from noon to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
