This photograph of a group of students who appear to be on a stage might have been taken during the conservation days that were held in the 1950s for all of the rural schools of the county.
All schools were required to teach agriculture and conservation. They would have a parade in downtown Monroe to promote conservation where the store windows were also decorated. There were only 80 of the rural schools left by the early 1950s.
If you can identify any of the persons in this photograph and possibly which school they attended, let Matt Figi know at 608-325-6503 or mfigi48@tds.net. If you have any photos or information about any of the 120 rural schools that existed in the earlier years that Matt might copy, please contact him.
