Richard Brunner of Monroe talks about his best friend Charlie, a 10-year-old orange cat.

Shauna Paschal, Brunner's daughter, convinced Brunner and his wife, Nancy, to meet a cat she saw at the Green County Humane Society. Three years later, Charlie is part of the family and is often referred to as "King Charles" because he rules the house.

Describe Charlie's personality.

He's very friendly and loves strangers. The last cat we had hated strangers and would hide somewhere if someone came over.

With Charlie, as soon as the door opens, his head goes up. His blue eyes are so piercing sometimes. He'll just sit and stare at you and you just wonder what they're thinking. He's something else.

What do you like to do together?

You ought to see the fun we have at night. Whatever chair I'm sitting in, he'll either be in my lap or stare at me until I move. He'll get right in my face. He's almost like a dog. He always wants to be with you.

He's got a harness, and we'll take him outside for a walk. He loves it outside, but not if it's too cold. He doesn't care for barking dogs, either.

What has it been like having Charlie in your life?

It's been entertaining. He's definitely good company. We all fell for Charlie. He's just family.
