Nanci & Mike Valentino & Jack

Mike and Nanci Valentino talk about their best friend Jack, a 9-year-old Jack Russell terrier.

The Valentinos have always had dogs, but after seeing a Jack Russell terrier in the movie “The Mask,” Mike decided that was the type of dog he wanted. After going to a breeder from Janesville, Nanci brought home Jack as a birthday present for Mike in 2010.

“They’re inseparable,” Nanci said.

Describe Jack’s personality.

He’s very active. He likes to pick on the rabbits and other critters outside and makes it known this is his yard. He just goes to town running around the house. He’s also a good snake catcher. His day is comprised of looking out the window at the wildlife, chasing things outside and then getting a treat when he comes back in the house. I wouldn’t say he’s not as smart as other dogs we’ve had, just smart in a different way.

What do you and Jack like to do together?

We like to take him to our cabin. He’s not a fetch type of dog. He doesn’t have time for that. He has to chase animals out of the yard. (Nanci) He’s very protective of Mike and doesn’t like it when he gives attention to anyone but him.

What has it been like having Jack in your life?

We don’t like kennels so we don’t like to leave him alone. He’s part of the family. He needs a lot of attention. Jack Russells are such unique dogs — they really have a lot of personality. He’s always there to greet us. You’re never lonely in the house with Jack.
