Marjie Wingler, Monroe, talks about her best friends Madeline Rose, also known as Maddie, a 2-year-old American Staffordshire terrier-mix and Charlie, a 10-year-old beagle-mix.
Wingler picked out Maddie from the Rock County Humane Society after losing her 17-year-old dog Max. She said she was drawn to Maddie because of her personality.
“She was a perky little thing,” Wingler said. “Her ears were so huge, she had to grow into them.”
Charlie joined the family in April after a friend became too overwhelmed to give him the attention he deserved.
“He’s settled in very well,” Wingler said.

Describe Charlie and Maddie’s personalities.
Charlie for an old guy, he has a lot of personality. If he thinks Maddie’s getting too much attention he’ll put his paw out and he’ll come over and sit next to me and lean against me. He likes to be petted. He doesn’t take any guff from Maddie. He lets her know if she’s being too rambunctious. They get along really well and they like to wrestle each other.
Maddie is very bright. She has learned a lot of different things. I’m gone a lot, but she’s very quick to learn things. She’s so full of energy, but I wouldn’t want her any other way.
What do you like to do together?
We go for little walks. They like to go with me to the post office. I try to get them out for rides so they don’t just think they’re going to the vet. They like going with me to my sister’s house. We like to be out in the yard and enjoy the nice weather. Mostly we just like to be together and play.
What has it been like having Charlie and Maddie in your life?
I just love having dogs in my life. I wouldn’t like coming home to an empty house. I’d be lost without them. I just love having them around.
