Gabe Witt, Monroe, talks about his best friend Koda, an 8-year-old chocolate lab.
Witt grew up with three labs. When they died, he went to a neighbor’s house to look at a litter of puppies. Koda, he said, was the cutest out of the bunch. Nine-year-old Witt put a little blue collar on him and said, “This is our new puppy.”

Describe Koda’s personality.
He’s very friendly and loves meeting new people. He loves to be around people all the time. He loves to play, but he has to be in the mood. He’s a very energetic, happy dog.
What do you and Koda like to do together?
We love to play together. We have a bunch of toys for him around the house. He lives for the outdoors. We go outside a lot, weather permitting. We love to walk the Badger State Trail. He’ll come with us if we go camping or if we go to Yellowstone Lake. He loves to swim as well.
What has it been like having Koda in your life?
He’s brought nothing but joy. He’s always happy to see us. I’ll miss him when I go to college. He’s not going to understand why I’m gone all of a sudden. He sleeps on my bed every night, but I think he’ll be all right. He’s like a sibling. We love him very much and he’s a part of our family.
