Brooke Adams talks about her best friend Otis, a 5-year-old German shepherd.

Adams got Otis as a rescue from a woman in northern Wisconsin. By the time Otis was a year old, he had already been the subject of two different abuse cases where he was beaten and starved.

When Adams brought him home, he was underweight and afraid of stairs. Now, Adams describes him as the biggest baby who loves people, kids and car rides.

Best Friends is a weekly feature designed to highlight a local resident and his or her pets. To suggest someone for the series, contact Marissa Weiher, photographer, at photo@themonroetimes.com.

Describe Otis’ personality.

He likes to match my personality. If I’m lazy, he’s lazy. If I’m doing something, he wants to be with me. It depends on what kind of mood I’m in. Unless there’s a ball, otherwise he’ll go until I make him stop or he’ll make himself sick.

What do you and Otis like to do together?

We like hiking, being outdoors and doing yard work. We enjoy really anything outside.

What has it been like having Otis in your life?

It’s like I have a kid, but I don’t. He knows when I’m done with work. He’ll be looking out the window waiting for me and he always brings me his toy. I don’t know what I’d do without him. I’m definitely never cold when I go to bed.
