Brianna and Tony Engeli, Monroe, talk about their best friend Bella, a 2-year-old black lab/Australian shepherd mix.

The Engelis got Bella from a friend who had an accidental litter of puppies. Although they both always had dogs growing up, Bella is the first dog they’ve had as a couple.

“They’re good companions,” Brianna said.

Best Friends is a weekly feature designed to highlight a local resident and his or her pets. To suggest someone for the series, contact Marissa Weiher, photographer, at photo@themonroetimes.com.

Describe Bella’s personality.

She’s hyperactive, very energetic and smart and very protective. I don’t ever have to worry about me or the baby (their 2-month-old son Brooks). She was good with Brooks right off the bat. It was amazing. Although she still gets a little jealous.

What do you and Bella like to do together?

She likes to play catch, go for walks and she loves bath time. After I had Brooks, I gave him a bath and Bella jumped in the tub when he was done. She also likes to go to my parents’ (Brian and Kathy Einbeck) house, and run around and play with the neighbor dog.

What has it been like having Bella in your life?

Crazy. She’s very energetic. She’s like having twins. It’s a good thing we didn’t have twins, because she’s enough along with a newborn. She has definitely helped keep me active.
