Youth complete safety course

GREEN COUNTY- The 2013 Green County Tractor and Machinery Safety Course had 21 youth complete the course in various locations in Green County between March 19 and April 25.

Youth completed 24 hours of classroom and hands-on instruction in various aspects of tractor and machinery safety to comply with Wisconsin Act 455, which allows children under the age of 16 to be certified to operate a farm tractor/self-propelled implement of husbandry on the highway.

This year's participants included Michael Ace, Brooklyn; Zach Asche, Freeport; Jeb Beck, Albany; Peter Blumer, Monticello; Owen Boss, Albany; Hunter Brewer, Albany; Phebe Christen, Argyle; Kelsey Cramer, Juda; Joe Crubaugh, Monroe; Trevor Drain, Monroe; Trevor Gilson, Blanchardville; Joe Hughes, Monroe; Jake Lengel, Juda; Cole Mahlkuch, Juda; Clayton Mahlkuch, Juda; Ethan Penniston, New Glarus; Emma Peterson, Monroe; Matt Schmitt, Juda; Josh Shell, Brooklyn; Travis Wolf, Monroe; and Kyle Zilliox, Monroe.

Sessions included instruction for operating tractors and farm machinery, including animal, fire, skid steer and lawn and garden safety. A special addition to the program included a presentation by the Juda Fire Department on farm accidents, tractor rollovers and extrications and first aid. First aid kits were given to each participant, which were sponsored by Green County UW-Extension and Green County Farm Bureau.

The youth were required to pass a written and driving test to complete the program.

The next Green County Tractor Safety Course will begin in March 2014.
