MONROE - On Oct. 22, the Pathfinder and Adventurer youth groups of the Monroe Seventh-Day Adventist church placed grocery bags on porches and doorsteps of homes in Monroe requesting donations for the food pantry. A week later, the groups returned to collect the donations with the help of adults driving the pick-up vehicles.
There were approximately 18 youth involved in collecting bags. The Green County Food Pantry reported the donations amounted to 1,835 pounds. Donated items ranged from cans of soup and boxes of rice to mittens, hats, toothpaste, hand sanitizer and shampoo.
The workers at the pantry indicated the load of food would last until Thanksgiving and possibly a bit after.
Pathfinders and Adventurers officials said they intend to make the food drive an annual event.
