Youth auction reaches new record

MONROE - The Green County Fair was host to the 9th Annual Dairy Youth Recognition Auction, in cooperation with the Foreign Type Cheesemakers cheese auction. Ten 4-H and FFA dairy exhibitors were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments, and a keepsake picture award was given to each successful bidder as a token of appreciation in place of the animal.

A gift basket of cheese, furnished by the Green County Ag Chest, was also presented to the highest bidder in each of the 10 lots.

This year's auction reached a new high of more than $13,500 in bids and donations from area businesses, officials said in a release. Youth selling at the Dairy Youth Recognition Auction receive half the amount bid in the form of savings bonds. Through the proceeds gathered from previous auctions, $3,700 in scholarships was presented to 10 Green County dairy youth to further their post high school education: Morgan Behnke, Bryan Cramer, Andrea McGowan, Jessica Schieldt, Christopher Voegeli, Stephanie Wyss, Tess Zettle, Brianna Wenger, Tyler Dorn, and Garrett Lederman.

Showing the Supreme Senior Champion Registered Female was Brooks Hendrickson, son of Kate and Jeff Hendrickson of Dayton Dairylanders 4-H club. High bidder was Middleton Machining, and contending bidder was Green Pasture Veterinary Service. Rachel McCullough, Spring Grove Honest Workers, daughter of Chris and Kathie McCullough, had the Supreme Junior Champion Registered Female. Her entry received a top bid from Mahlkuch Electric, with Dr. David and Simone Jeans, DVS as the contending bidder.

Clarence Bridge Pioneer member Jenna Sweeney, daughter of Paul and Tammy Sweeney, showed the Supreme Senior Champion Grade Female. Top bidding honors went to Colony Brands, Inc., and Decatur Dairy was runner-up. Winning the bid for the Supreme Junior Champion Grade Female, exhibited by Brock Reeson, was Pecatonica Veterinary Service, and contending bidding was by New Glarus Welding and Klondike Cheese. Pioneer is a member of the York 4-H club and the son of Dean and Rae Reeson.

The low somatic cell count cow was exhibited by Paige Hoesly. Paige is a member of the Clarence Bridge Pioneers 4-H club and a daughter of Todd and Trish Hoesly. Sue Barrett of Dairy Directions was the top bidder with Klondike Cheese and Innovative Ag services contending.

Stephanie Wyss, daughter of Randy and Pam Wyss, was recognized as the Sportsmanship Champion, for demonstrating strong sportsmanship in and outside of the show ring, enthusiasm for the project, a willingness to help others and a strong commitment to the youth dairy project. Wyss is a member of the Clarno 4-H Club. The top bid went to Maple Leaf Cheesemakers and Renk Seed - Roger Brugger. Washington Implement, Century 21 and Bugger Dairy were all contending.

The Beginning Showmanship Winner was Brian McCullough, with the winning bid given by Decatur Dairy. Contenting bidder was Monroe Veterinary Service. McCullough is the son of Chris and Kathie McCullough. Alyssa Cramer was the Intermediate Showmanship winner. The winning bid for her recognition was by Mahlkuch Electric with Brugger Dairy, with Zweifel Construction contending. Cramer is the daughter of Robert, Jr. and Nikki Cramer. McCullough and Cramer are both members of the Spring Grove Honest Workers 4-H club. Chris Voegeli, a member of the Monticello FFA Chapter and a son of Bryan and Beth Voegeli, was the recipient of the Senior Showmanship award and received a top bid from Renk Seed - Roger Brugger. Contending bidders were Brennan's, Bank of Monticello, Washington Implement, Pleasant Grain Services and IBA.

Earning the prestigious award of Supreme Showmanship Champion was Dayton Dairylander 4-H member Breinne Hendrickson. Hendrickson is the daughter of Kate and Jeff Hendrickson. The winning bid for her recognition came from Klondike Cheese, with Washington Implement and Green Pasture Vet Service, as the contending bidders.

Additional donors to the Dairy Youth Recognition Auction were Monroe Veterinary Service, Chalet Cheese Co-op and Green County Milk Quality Council. Dave Koning and Paul Beach donated their talents as professional auctioneers, and local dairy queens were on hand to assist with the presentation of awards.
