Youngsterswalk for a lesson in history

MONROE - Sixty second grade students from Northside School walked to the Green County Historical Museum on Monday, June 1, to get a preview of the special displays at the museum.

Stewart and Christie Strait, Ronna Jeglum and Matt Figi pointed out interesting items and answered questions from the group. Temporary displays this year are military items and "Quilts and Their Stories." The one-room school was also open for the students.

The military display includes military uniforms, photographs and artifacts from the Civil War through the Vietnam Conflict, along with some military trench art.

Friends of the historical society loaned 10 quilts to the society for display throughout the season. The story of each quilt has been written up and will be shared with the visitors.

In addition to the temporary displays, many changes to the museum and the displays within it, were made during the winter. Two more display cases have been added and the upstairs cases were rearranged and reorganized. All of the mannequins and dress forms are dressed in clothing that has not been seen for many years.

The museum and the schoolhouse will be open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. through the end of September. Their is plenty of parking behind the museum, which is located at 1617 9th St. in Monroe. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for student ages 12 to 18 and free for children younger than age 12.
