Woman's Club names contest winners

MONROE - Winners for the Monroe Woman's Club Poetry and Short Story Contest were presented with certificates during the March Club meeting. Entries were divided into first-third grades, fourth-fifth grades, seventh-eighth grades, ninth-twelfth and Club member.

The winners for poetry in first-third grades were Katelyn Black, first place, and Sydney Mathison, second place. Short story winners were Sydney Mathison, first place; Shayla Wilhite, second place; and Jack Rogerson, third place. There were no entries from the fourth-fifth grade levels.

Middle School winners were: short story, Avery Erb, first place; and poetry winner, Sarah Sabatke, first place.

The senior high winners for poetry were Jamie Armstrong, first place, and Jennifer Buol, second place. Diana Vance was the short story first place winner for club member.

The entries were judged by area retired teachers: Earl Brockman, Nancy McGuire and Maggie Rufi. The General Federation of Woman's Club holds the contest annually to recognize the efforts of students in poetry and short story writing. The entries will be judged at the district level in April. District level winners will be judged again in a state wide Woman's Club contest. Monroe Woman's Club has been in existence since 1884 and works on local projects to help with community improvements.
