MONROE - With the end of the school year, many students are planning to further their education at various colleges and universities in the fall, and the Green County Veteran's Service office is reminding eligible Veterans and their families about the Wisconsin G.I. Bill.
The Wisconsin G.I. Bill should not be confused with the completely separate Federal G.I. Bill.
The Wisconsin G.I. Bill tuition remission program provides a waiver of tuition and fees at University of Wisconsin System and Wisconsin Technical College System schools.
Eligible Veterans and certain dependents, such as spouses and children, may receive the greater of 8 semesters or 128 credits for technical, undergraduate, professional, or graduate study.
Basic eligibility requirements are as follows: The Veteran must have been a resident of Wisconsin at time of entry into Active Duty military service. The Veteran must have been honorably discharged.
For spouses and children, basic requirements are: The Veteran is awarded a federal VA service connected disability rating of 30 percent or more, or the Veteran died in the line of duty, or the Veteran's death after military service is determined by the VA to be as a direct result of a service-connected condition. Any recipient must reside in the State of Wisconsin.
There is no expiration date of the benefit for the Veteran.
For qualifying spouses and unremarried surviving spouses, the benefit must be used within 10 years of the date of death or the initial disability rating of 30 percent or greater.
For qualifying children, the benefit is available from ages 17 through 25.
