MONTICELLO - Green Cares Food Pantry is a volunteer-run pantry that operates in Monticello and serves all communities in Green County.

Green Cares serves an estimated 265 families in need each month, according to a news release. These families are made up of an average of 850 total individuals that live and work in Green County. The pantry is open on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., all other Tuesdays from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon, and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Appointments are appreciated but walk-ins when needed are also accepted.

A total of 168 volunteers donated more than 4,000 hours of their time to the pantry in 2016, according to the release. These volunteers assisted patrons directly during open hours. They packed boxes of food for the upcoming appointments. Some volunteers place orders for the food purchased and another group of volunteers unloads the trucks with those orders and so much more. The pantry is in need of additional volunteers to pick up donations from local businesses, according to the release. These items will be directly distributed to those that are in need of the pantry's services. Green Cares does have a vehicle that can be used to pick up these items. Interested volunteers should contact the facility.

Green Cares Food Pantry also has an upcoming fundraiser at Hawk's Mill Winery in Browntown. Sip, Savor and Support will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sept. 9. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door and are currently on sale. If three are purchased, another will be free. This price will not be available the day of the event. A ticket includes eight wine tastings, with beer and nonalcoholic options available, hors d'oeuvres, a tour of the winery and entertainment by The Gathering.

There will be a cash bar, raffles, a wine pull and door prizes throughout the evening. All of the funds raised at the fundraiser will go directly to feeding hungry families, according to the release.
