ALBANY — Local citizens are banding together to clear litter in the Sugar River and on its banks on Saturday, May 18. They will also be focusing on clearing fallen trees and debris that block enthusiasts from navigating the river. They are asking for help and need volunteers to walk the banks, ride in canoes to pick up trash and cut tree branches which will then be handed to those on shore or riding in canoes.
“Whether you go tubing, fishing or just skip stones, it leaves a footprint on the river that can add up over time and affect the health of the river. It’s time to give back and help preserve the river and keep it accessible for the future of everyone’s recreation and its flourishing watershed,” the Sugar River Cleanup organization shared in a press release.
Canoes and trash bags will be provided, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own equipment as well, like canoes, small boats, chain saws, bow saws and waders. This is a great way to earn community service points, extra credit and volunteer hours for school, Scouts or any other organizations. Local businesses will be providing food and refreshments. Volunteers can work for an hour or all day.
Check-in and registrations will begin at 9 a.m. at the Albany American Legion Hall, 300 N. Water Street, for the 10 a.m. start. However, a representative will be on premise at the American Legion to direct those that come later.
