USPS seeks help to end to vandalism

MONROE - The United States Postal Service is urging community members to be vigilant regarding acts of mailbox vandalism.

"Mailbox vandalism increases during the summer months, and we need to encourage everyone to be aware of any misconduct that may occur in their neighborhoods," Monroe Postmaster OIC Gene Naumann said.

Mailboxes are protected by federal law, and crimes against them and the mail they contain are considered federal offenses. Violators can be fined up to $250,000 or imprisoned for up to three years for each act of vandalism.

"If you have teenagers at home, talk with them about the downside of damaging mailboxes, and vandalism in general," Naumann said.

Anyone who discovers someone tampering with a mailbox should gather a description of the person and any vehicle and immediately report the information to the police.
