MONROE - Perhaps it's been awhile since you've visited Monroe's Turner Hall. Maybe you've never visited Monroe's Turner Hall. On Saturday, Feb. 6, the public is encouraged to discover again, or perhaps for the first time, this wonderful historic, landmark facility during an Open House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The open house will feature the upper level Grand Hall; lower level Ratskeller Restaurant; and a small, family-oriented bowling center.

Highlights of the open house will include drawings for door prizes at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.; samples of outstanding entrèes, hors d'oeuvres and desserts prepared by Turner Hall's own on-site chefs; displays of creative table settings, dècor and room arrangements; an on-going slide presentation of past events in the Grand Hall; tours of the Swiss-related historic displays, exhibits and paintings in the lower level Ratskeller; and a chance to meet and speak with Large Event Coordinator Wanda Bowles, Ratskeller Manager Mick McClain and Jeff Thomm, manager of the lanes.

Established in 1868 by Swiss and German immigrants - a few short years after the Civil War - the Turner Hall of Monroe is believed to be the only Turner (gymnast) Hall of Swiss origin left in the United States. The original structure, located on the same site as the current building, burned to the ground in 1936. The current building, a Swiss Emmenthal chalet designed by German architect, Max Hamisch, opened in 1938 and is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places.

A 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, the mission and government of the Turner Hall of Monroe is much the same today as it was in 1868.

Located at 1217 17th Ave., Monroe, two blocks south of the Square near the Monroe Middle School, the facility is smoke-free and handicapped-accessible. Parking is available in a lot across the street and within a half block. More information is available at www.TurnerHallofMonroe.org or by calling (608) 325-3461.
