MONROE - Looking for a great way to beat the winter doldrums? Check out Turner Hall of Monroe's annual Fasnacht Masquerade/ Costume Dance. This kick-off event for Turner Hall's 2009 Swiss Heritage Series is scheduled for 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22 in the Grand Hall. As a departure from the usual Sunday afternoon polka bands, the dance will feature soft rock classics from the 50s, 60s and 70s played by the Legends Band of Elizabeth, Ill. A fun event the whole family can enjoy, masks and costumes are encouraged, but not required.
Fasnacht, Switzerland's version of Mardi Gras, is a multi-day celebration before the beginning of Lent, featuring drum and piccolo bands, mimes, out-of-tune brass bands, local humor and satire, food, drink, and costumed revelers wandering the streets. Turner Hall's Fasnacht celebration, although on a smaller scale, captures the fun and spirit of the Swiss tradition. Popcorn and beverages will be available for purchase during the dance, and the lower level Ratskeller Restaurant will feature a special Fasnacht menu from 5 to 8 p.m.
Adults are admitted free with the advance purchase of a souvenir Fasnacht button, which are available for $7 at the Ratskeller Restaurant of the Turner Hall of Monroe through Saturday, February 21. At-the-door admission is $8, with children in fifth grade and under, $2. More information is available at www.TurnerHallofMonroe.org or by calling (608) 325-3461.
