MONROE - Turner Hall will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5.

The public is encouraged to discover or revisit the historic landmark facility. The open house will feature the upper level Grand Hall, lower level Ratskeller Restaurant and the bowling center.

Highlights of the open house will include drawings for door prizes at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 p.m., and samples of entrees, hors d'oeuvres and desserts prepared by on-site chefs. There will also be displays of creative table settings, decor and room arrangements; on-going slide presentations of past Grand Hall events and Turner Hall history; and tours of the Swiss-related historic displays, exhibits and paintings in the lower level Ratskeller. There will also be a chance to meet and speak with Large Event Coordinator Wanda Bowles; Ratskeller restaurant managers Steve and Sharon Streiff; and Jeff Thomm, manager of the bowling lanes.

Established in 1868 by Swiss and German immigrants, the Turner Hall of Monroe is believed to be the only Turner (gymnast) Hall of Swiss origin left in the United States, as well as being one of the oldest continuously operating Swiss entities in the country. The original structure, located on the same site as the current building, burned to the ground in 1936. The current building, a Swiss Emmenthal chalet designed by German architect Max Hamisch, opened in 1938 and is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. A non-profit corporation, the mission and government of the Turner Hall of Monroe is much the same today as it was in 1868.

It is located at 1217 17th Ave. Monroe. The building is handicapped-accessible. Parking available in a lot across the street and within a half block.
