Pieces in Time will be exhibited by artist John F. McGee from Jan. 8 through Jan. 30 in the MAC Frehner Gallery. This piece is Blue Tangle.
MONROE - The Monroe Art Center is starting off the New Year with two gallery openings for the month of January. On Jan. 8 the public is invited to the Frehner Gallery for the opening reception of "Pieces in Time" by artist John F. McGee. On the same night, the Artways Youth Gallery in the Wesley Hall wing of the Monroe Arts Center will open to feature student artwork from Northside Elementary, Parkside Elementary and St. Victor School in Monroe.

"Pieces in Time" will celebrate the work of well-known oil painter John F. McGee of Sun Prairie. McGee has been exhibiting his work for over 37 years and will now share his intricate oil paintings of wildlife, nature, and landscapes with the Monroe Arts Center. Whether it's winter birds sharing a snow-covered branch, Canadian geese taking flight over a cattail marsh, or a babbling brook as it makes its journey around protruding rocks, McGee shows us a fleeting glimpse of time that could be missed in the blink of an eye. In addition to exhibiting work in galleries throughout the Western and Midwest states, McGee has illustrated 43 nature-oriented children's books for Northwood Press and has taught painting for the adult education program through Madison Area Technical College.

In an effort to generate inspiration and excitement of visual art in the youth of the area, January will also kick off the opening of the Artways Youth Gallery in Wesley Hall of the Monroe Arts Center. Each month through April, the gallery will feature student artwork from two or three area schools and will open at the same time as the reception for the Frehner Gallery exhibit of the month. All area students and their families are encouraged to attend the Frehner Gallery exhibit on opening night and enjoy a short gallery talk by the artist. This is a great opportunity for student artists to learn about and enjoy the work of a professional artist while showcasing their own work in the student gallery.

The opening reception for both exhibits is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, in the Monroe Arts Center Frehner Gallery. McGee will give a short Gallery Talk at 5:15 p.m. to discuss his inspiration and techniques. This opening reception, with its wonderful refreshment table, is a free, informal, come-as-you-are event. Both exhibits will be on display from Jan. 8-30 and can be viewed anytime during regular business hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

This exhibit has been made possible by Monroe Arts Center Corporate Underwriter, Swiss Colony and Season Media Underwriters, BIG Radio and Monroe Publishing. Additional support for this exhibit was provided by Michael and Shelley Muranyi.
