Time to order hardwood trees for spring planting

MONROE - The Green County Land and Water Conservation Department is offering 11 varieties of trees and three varieties of shrubs for landowners interested in planting trees next spring.

The tree varieties are: Bur oak, red oak, white oak, swamp white oak, sugar maple, butternut, sycamore, apple, white pine, tamarack and Norway spruce. Shrubs available are arrowwood, highbush cranberry and witch hazel.

The trees and shrubs are bare root and range in height from 1 to 4 feet, depending on species. The cost is $2 a tree with a minimum order of 10 of one species and must be ordered in increments of 10.

Most of the trees and shrubs are native to the area except the Norway spruce and apple. The species offered cover a broad range of soil types and moistures, from dry to very wet. This is the first year that apple, Norway spruce, arrowwood and witch hazel have been offered through the county.

Five-foot tree tubes, root dip, including Mycorrhizal root dip, and nutrient packs also are available to order. Tree spuds can be "rented" with a deposit. The tree planters, which allows quick planting of trees, are waiting to be rented. Interested people should get on the planter schedule now.

Trees can be ordered by contacting the LWCD directly by phone and walk-in or by ordering through the Green County website www.co.green.wi.gov. If one is unsure about what trees will work in a soil or has questions about the trees or how to order, stop in or call the Green County Land and Water Conservation Department at 325-4195. Orders will be taken until Dec. 29. Trees are scheduled for pick up April 19 and 20.
