BLANCHARDVILLE - River Valley Trading Co. in Blanchardville, is hosting a pair of herbal seminars the weekend of March 27-28. Saturday, March 27, herbal pharmacist, David LaLuzerne will discuss the history of herbs and compare their use to pharmaceuticals in his seminar, "Getting to Know Herbs." Sunday, March 28, Wisconsin herbalist, Nancy Momsen will describe how to "Design an Herb Garden around Your Needs" and provide seeds and cuttings for people to plant their own herbs.
In his presentation, "Getting to Know Herbs," LaLuzerne will tell about the long history of herb use throughout the world and "evidence" for their usefulness. He will discuss the differences between drugs and herbs (herbs are not "green drugs"), how to safely use herbs, and herbal dosage forms. Learn about popular herbs and their proper usage, as well as some little known, useful, herbs that probably grow nearby. The last portion of class will be an herb tasting.
Momsen has been enjoying herbs for over 30 years. It all began with an anthropological study of how cultures have used the botanical world around them. Her fascination has not diminished through the years; in fact, herbs have become a major ingredient in her daily life. As president of The International Herb Association, a member of The American Botanical Council, the Herb Society of American, the Madison Herb Society, The Fox Valley Herb group and the Janesville Herb Society, Momsen continues to learn about herbs. She teaches herbal classes at Black Hawk Technical College and presents programs to gardeners, homemakers, and students throughout the Midwest. Each student will take home 4 or 5 herb plantings from the March 28 seminar.
Herbal teas and sweet and savory herbal treats will served at 12:30 p.m. each day preceding the formal presentation from 1 to 4 p.m. Each presentation includes a hands-on component, so seminars will be limited to 12 participants. The fee for individual seminars is $25, or $40 for both, and will be held at River Valley Trading Co., 204 S. Main St., Blanchardville. Register by Tuesday, March 23.
