MADISON - The long-running annual Sheep Management WisLine teleconference series will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 8, Feb. 5, and Mar. 5 in 2009 at WisLine sites in many County Extension Offices throughout the state of Wisconsin.

The topic for the first program on Jan. 8 will be "Recommendations on Sheep Breeds for Different Production Situations" presented by Dave Thomas, Extension Sheep Specialist, UW-Madison. This program will divide the more than 50 breeds of sheep now found in the U.S. into groups with similar performance levels for the production traits of reproduction, growth, milk production, fleece quality, and carcass merit so that producers and youth project members can select the best breeds to meet the goals of their flock or sheep project.

The topics and speakers for the February and March programs are yet to be finalized. Contact your County Extension Office, or check-out the UW-Extension sheep Web site at for the entire 2009 schedule. More information for the January program, including the handout material, is on the Web site.

Sheep Management WisLine programs are provided as a service of UW-Extension, Cooperative Extension, and the UW-Madison, Department of Animal Sciences and are hosted by Dave Thomas, Sheep Extension Specialist. The WisLine system provides two-way voice communication between the speakers and listeners from participating County Extension Offices in Wisconsin and are free to the public.

Contact your County Extension Office for availability in your area. Participants must call their local County Extension Office prior to each session to register for that particular session.

This will guarantee that the WisLine site is open and that adequate copies of handout materials are available. Further questions should be directed to your local County Extension Office, (608) 328-9440 or to Dave Thomas, Sheep Extension Specialist, UW-Extension and UW-Madison (608) 263-4306 or e-mail: dlthomas@wisc.edu.
