MONROE - Eric Tabaka, 14, Monroe, earned the Eagle Scout Award, the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts.

Tabaka was recognized in a court of honor ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 23. A member of Boy Scout Troop No. 417, Tabaka is one of approximately 2 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank, according to Scoutmaster Bill Whitford.

Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a community, church or synagogue-related service project to earn his Eagle. Tabaka chose to lead groups in removing brush and invasive species at the Whitewater Effigy Mounds Preserve. He also raised $2,000 for the future installation of an entrance garden area at the preserve.

Tabaka is a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Monroe, and is active in the bands and basketball at Monroe High School, where he is a freshman.

He is the son of Rev. John and Christine Tabaka, Monroe.
