Graduating high school seniors from River Valley, Dodgeville, Mineral Point, Highland, Iowa-Grant, Barneveld and Pecatonica schools must submit applications for the Mary Louise Symon Memorial Award by May 1. Application forms can be obtained from school counselors at each of the above schools.

This $500 award is presented annually by Grassroots Citizens of Wisconsin to one or more students who are committed to their communities. The award is named for Mary Louise Symon, the first woman chair of the Dane County Board.

Symon was committed throughout her life to advancing a broad social agenda, including protecting the environment, preserving farmland and rural regions, making courts more humane, ensuring fair housing and defending social services, among others. She was a founding member of Grassroots, a group centered in Iowa County that fosters positive social change and dialogue through an active, involved and informed community network of citizens.

The Symon award can be used to further the recipient's leadership experience by attending college, performing a public service internship involving civic or political action groups, participating in a leadership conference or similar activities.

Applications are available on the Grassroots website at www.grassrootswi.org. For further information, contact Grassroots Citizens of Wisconsin, grassroots@ merr.com or (608) 623-2109.
