NEW GLARUS - The Chalet of the Golden Fleece Museum received a grant for $4,311 from the New Glarus Community Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin Inc.
The grant money will fund the building restoration project and will include repainting the first-floor storm windows on the west side of the building, replacing the decorative serpent eaves trough terminals and repairing the front porch steps and railing. The Friends of the Chalet of the Golden Fleece, a group of volunteers that supports the museum, applied for the grant online.
The Friends have been supporting the museum for five years. Accomplishments during that time included conducting a historical condition report, getting the building on the State and National Historic Registers and operating it as a museum again. The New Glarus Community Foundation has funded new signage for the museum, tarnish proof cloth for the silver collection, replacing the rotting logs on the roof and more. The Chalet is one of three authentic Swiss-style chalets in Wisconsin. Not only does the restoration project help preserve the building, but it keeps the exterior attractive for visitors. For more information on the Friends, email them at nggoldenfleece@gmail.com. The museum will reopen May 26. For more information on the Community Foundation, contact Linda Gebhardt at 328-4060 or visit their website at www.cfsw.org. The Foundation serves nine counties.
