ATTICA — The 2021 Southwest Wisconsin Land Judging Contest was held Oct. 14 at the farm owned by Marvin and Linda Delzer, just north of Attica. This contest is co-hosted by the Green, Grant, and Lafayette Land and Water Conservation Departments.
Students participating were from: Black Hawk, Burlington, Cuba City, Fennimore, Juda, Lancaster, Monticello, Pecatonica, Potosi, and River Ridge. A total of 105 students participated in the contest.
The students reviewed four soil pits and evaluated soil properties, estimated slope, ranked land classes, and recommended conservation practices in the contest. Two pits were located on drier uplands and two pits in wet bottomland. Soils ranged from silt loams to silty clay loams to loamy sands.
Jeff Deniger, Soil Scientist, of the Natural Resources Conservation Service was the official judge of the contest.
