Summer Open House at the Saxton House Aug. 17
Community Brief

ARGYLE — From noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, Historic Argyle invites the public to the Summer Open House at the Saxton House, located at 204 North State Street, Argyle.

The Saxton House residence is the historic childhood home of Robert “Fighting Bob” LaFollette, a distinguished American politician and former Governor of Wisconsin. The event is complimentary and will feature local history celebrations with music, speakers, a food truck, and a variety of vendors offering quilts, ceramics, books, and crafts. Guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the live music and speakers.

The Saxton House, built in 1850, is among the oldest buildings in Argyle and served as the boyhood home of Robert M. LaFollette. “Fighting Bob” spent his formative years in Argyle from 1862 to 1870, later becoming Governor of Wisconsin, a U.S. Senator, and a Progressive Party presidential candidate.

Originally located at the crossroads of the current highways Wis. 78 and 81, the house was relocated in 1910 to accommodate the L. A. Rossing Department Store. Historic Argyle acquired the property in 2000, and it now stands at its current address. It is named after LaFollette’s stepfather, John J. Saxton, who constructed the home. The house will be open for tours throughout the afternoon.
