Students to compete in oratorical contest

MONROE - Area students under the age of 19 who have not graduated from high school or the equivalent can apply to compete in the Monroe Optimist International Oratorical Contest at 7 p.m. March 7 at the Union Presbyterian Church in Monroe.

Contestants will present a four- to five-minute speech on the topic of "How my best brings out the best in others." Prizes of $150, $100 and $50 will be awarded to the top three speeches, and the top two winners will advance to the Zone level of the competition. District winners receive $2,500 scholarships and the regional/world championship winner can receive a $15,000 scholarship.

Applications and contest rules can be picked up at the Monroe Middle School or the Monroe High School, or they can be downloaded at www.optimist.org/Forms/Oratorical_RULES_PAD-E_15-16.pdf. Applications are due by 3:15 p.m. Friday at the high school or middle school office.
