MONROE - The Knights of Columbus announced the winners of its city-wide math and spelling contest held Saturday, Dec. 7 through Thursday, Dec. 12. All first-place winners are eligible to advance to the regional contest to be held next March.
City-wide fifth-grade math winners were Alex Henry, first; Marissa Ellefson, second; and Evan Beyer, third. Spelling winners were Bailey Sanders, first; Tyler Matley, second; and Haley Rupe-Hardy, third.
Sixth-grade math winners were Logan Leuzinger, first; Dylan Fahrney, second; and Jake Brower, third. Spelling winners were Cailey Calvagna, first; Kylie Merchant, second; and Grace Jarrett, third.
Seventh-grade math were Grant Gogin, first; Carlita Eberle, second; and Haley Arneson, third. Spelling winners were Emily Eliasson, first; Breanne Wilhite, second; and Brianna Weiss, third.
The first-place math winner for eighth grade was Sydney Mathiason. The first-place spelling winner was Britt Ramos.
The first place city-wide winners in math and spelling will each receive an engraved plaque and are eligible to compete at the Diocesan Level Knowledge Contest in March, where they will compete against other winners from the southwestern part of the state.
Diocesan winners will advance to the state level contest to be held in April.
Fifth-grade building winners
Knights of Columbus also announced the winners for the fifth-graders' school level competitions, held from Tuesday, Dec. 10 through Thursday, Dec. 12 at Abraham Lincoln, Northside, Parkside, and St. Victor's schools.
St. Victor's school had 16 total fifth-grade entries for the math and spelling contest. Math winners at the school level were Owen Smith, first; Roman Bauer, second; and Brennan Boyce, third. Spelling winners at the school level were Benjamin Moon, first; Miguel Aragon, second; and Kourtney Walter, third.
Northside Elementary had 28 total fifth-grade entries for the math and spelling contest. Math winners were Alex Henry, first; Jaime Keene, second; and Jacob Bos, third. Spelling winners were Tyler Matley, first; Brendan Swindle, second; and Makenzie Wuebben, third.
Parkside Elementary had 21 total fifth-grade entries for the math and spelling contest. Math winners were Marissa Ellefson, first; Evan Beyer, second; and Preston Ambrose, third. Spelling winners were Bailey Sanders, first; Haley Rupe-Hardy, second; and Kaitlynn Pivonka-Johnson, third.
Abraham Lincoln had 21 total fifth-grade winners for the math and spelling contest. Math winners were Luke Dubach, first; Kendall Wild, second; and Hunter Harrison, third. Spelling winners were Sabrina Siegel, first; Katherine Kallas, second; and Elizabeth Snider, third.
