MONROE — Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.
Essential for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses and traumatic injuries, it all begins with one person making a generous donation of blood.
The American Red Cross provides 40% of the nation’s blood and blood components — all from volunteers. Yet supply can’t always meet demand as only 3 percent of age-eligible people donate to the blood supply.
To offset this shortage, St. John’s United Church of Christ will hold a community blood drive in connection with the American Red Cross from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, May 3, in Fellowship Hall of the church, 1724 14th Street.
Appointments are recommended and can be made by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or by visiting RedCrossBlood.org and entering a nearby zip code in the upper right corner. This will take the donor to an appointment page.
