ALBANY - The Albany Historical Society will present its second Civil War display through the end of July and possibly longer.
The collection, which is on loan from Kim Tschudy, New Glarus, is in continued recognition of the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the American Civil War.
The display is primarily of historic documents and photos to accompany the documents. These include the Gettysburg Address, photos of the dedication of the Memorial at Gettysburg, and the veteran's reunion held on the Gettysburg Battlefield. Also included are copies of newspapers telling of the breakup of the union and recruiting posters from both the North and South.
There is one display each of generals Grant and Lee, which include photos of their families and some of their words and writings. One includes a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation and photos of slaves and their free black brothers and sisters. Another poster shows weapons of the war, a map of the battlefields and ends with the Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. Also included are some replicas of Confederate money. The museum is located at 117 Water St., Albany, and is open on Saturday's during the summer, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Special tours of the museum are available upon request.
