BRODHEAD - Popcorn, pickles and potato chips are part of the food history of the city of Brodhead, Wisconsin.
"Key Ingredients: America by Food" exhibit, coming in May and June of 2011 to the Brodhead Public Library, is part of the Smithsonian Institution's Museum on Main Street program,
"Most of us eat every day without giving a second thought to consider the wealth of history and culture that influence dining habits and taste preferences," said Lea Brookman, local Key Ingredients project manager who initiated this Humanities Council project. "The Key Ingredients exhibit explores how our recipes, menus, ceremonies and etiquette have been directly shaped by many factors, including our country's rich immigrant experience; the history and innovations of food preparation technology; and the ever-changing availability of key ingredients."
The exhibit explores the connections between Americans and the foods they produce, prepare, preserve and present at table. Key Ingredients looks beyond the home to restaurants, diners and celebrations that help build a sense of community through food. The exhibit also addresses farming, table manners, and food history.
Each host community will be personalizing the exhibit to reflect regional favorites and local specialties. For example, Green County's display will highlight dairy farms, cheesemaking and Swiss heritage, as well as a Festival of Feasts with focus on foodie events associated with local agriculture - like Green County Cheese Days.
A number of special events will be held during the time of the exhibit, including a pie contest, a build-your-own strawberry sundae celebration and a Native American gardening and cooking demonstration. The Brodhead Historical Society has also created a brochure highlighting a Food Tour of Historic Brodhead. Ag tourism events already taking place during the exhibit, including Breakfast on the Farm and Brodhead's Tour the Farms Day, will be cross-promoted in the marketing of Key Ingredients.
Local residents of all ages will be invited to be part of the Key Ingredients experience by sharing personal stories related to food and food memories.
