BRODHEAD - Daniel Smith will give a presentation titled "Seven Decades of a Family Farm" at the Brodhead Historical Society monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Bank of Brodhead. The event is open to the public.
Smith grew up on, and later farmed for 30 years, his family's dairy farm in northwestern Illinois. His presentation reveals through photos, text and stories the changes a family farm goes through over time. Thousands of Midwestern farm families share the Smith farm's journey as farming, families and society have changed. The story of the Smith family farm is, in a microcosm, the story of agriculture in this region.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Smith returned to the family farm in 1978 and retired from farming in 2008. Today, he serves as the administrator of the Division of Agricultural Development for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
