MONROE - SMART Recovery is an addiction self-help group that takes a scientific approach. The group was started in Albany on Nov. 1, 2015. Beginning May 1, SMART Recovery will begin meeting every other week in Monroe.

SMART Recovery (Self-Management And Recovery Training) is not a 12-step Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous group.

The group's purpose is to support individuals who have chosen to abstain, or are considering abstinence from any type of addictive behaviors (substances or activities) by learning how to change self-defeating thinking, emotions and actions and to work toward long-term satisfactions and quality of life.

The group's approach to recovery includes encouraging self-empowerment and self-reliance, encouraging individuals to recover and live satisfying lives, and sharing with participants the tools and techniques for self-directed change. Meetings are educational and include open discussions. The group advocates the appropriate use of prescribed medications and psychological treatments.
