MONROE - Monroe High School senior Michael Turek, son of Sue and James Turek, has been named an All-State Scholar by the state, joining 119 other high-school seniors from around Wisconsin.

There were 615 seniors nominated to the program; each had academic records considered superior as determined by grade-point average and college admissions test scores. In previous years, seniors named All-State Scholars were eligible for scholarships. However, this year's scholars will not receive monetary awards due to Congress enacting a continuing resolution in April that cut federal spending.

"Wisconsin's All-State Scholars are among our highest-achieving students," State Superintendent Tony Evers said. "Their academic accomplishments are truly remarkable and worthy of praise. I encourage these students to pursue their dreams of postsecondary education even though they will no longer receive a federal, merit-based scholarship."

Turek plans to attend either Creighton University, Loras College or the University of Iowa to study biochemistry.
