Senior center plans classes and events
Senior Center

MONROE — The Behring Senior Center has numerous activities and classes planned. Arrangements to participate can be made by calling the senior center at 325-3173 or stop at the center reception desk. Participants must pre-register for all programs, including free ones, so staff will know how many will be attending. All classes and activities are for people 55 and older.


Classes

●  Knit socks with Jocelyn from 10 a.m. to noon on Mondays, July 8, 15, 22, and 29. Must know how to knit with double pointed needles. Jocelyn will contact students of their supplies to bring. There is a cost for this class and a limit of eight people.

●  Market Volatility by Edward Jones will be held at 11:30 a.m. on July 23. Lunch will be provided.

●  A beaded snowflake ornament class will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on July 24 with Bonita Loeffel. There is a cost for this class and limited to eight people.

●  A computer basics class will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Aug. 15 with Robin McLeish. This very basic computer class if for beginners. Do not bring your laptop or tablet. There is a cost for this class and a limit of eight people.

●  A senior self defense class will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Aug. 16 with Timm Burns. A mix of discussions and hands on training. Wear loose clothing, no shorts or tennis shoes. There is a cost for this class and limited to 12 people.


Events

●  Every Tuesday the card game “Horse and Pepper” will be at 1 p.m.

●  Breakfast for all Veterans and spouses ages 55 and over will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on July 3. Do not come before 8 a.m. The next breakfast will be Aug. 7

●  Songs of Life by Rich Baumann will be at 1:30 p.m. on July 9.

●  Chair massage by Melissa Kieler will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 15. Sessions are 20 minutes and there is a cost.

●  Tips for summer safety will be held at 10 a.m. on July 15.

● Summertime waffle breakfast will be at 9 a.m. on July 17. There is a cost for this and a limit of 40 people.

●  Beach Bingo will be held at 1 p.m. on July 19. Wear beach themed attire and be entered into a drawing for a $10 Walmart gift card.

●  A program on the book “Children, Save Yourselves” will be at 1 p.m. on July 23. A true story of two Jewish brothers who survived the Holocaust.

● The July movie “Philomena” will be at 1:30 p.m. on July 25.

●  Chair activity bingo will be held at 1:30 p.m. on July 30 with Bridget.

●  Beach ball volleyball will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Mondays, Aug. 5, 12, 19, and 26 at the Twining Park sand volleyball courts. Contact Bridget at 608-325-8891.

●  A magic show and root beer floats will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 13 with magician Trent Weber. Limit of 80 people.

●  Annual golf outing will be held at 9 a.m. on Aug. 14 at the Wolf Hollow Golf Course, 6546 N Shippee Rd., Lena, Illinois. There is a cost for the golf, cart and lunch and must be paid before Aug. 6.

● Introduction to Pickleball will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. Wear exercise clothes and gym shoes.

● Highground Veterans Memorial Park trip will be held Sept. 17. Open to the public, they do not have to be 55 or older. There is a cost and due Aug. 17.
