BRODHEAD - Gov. Scott Walker has declared Feb. 12-16 as "School Bus Driver Recognition Week" in Wisconsin.

One reason to celebrate School Bus Driver Recognition Week is the impact that school buses have on student safety and the environment. School bus drivers play an important role in setting a positive climate for students to start and finish their day, making sure students arrive safely to their destinations. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, students are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely when taking a school bus than by traveling by car, due to rigorous safety standards for school buses and their drivers, along with student training efforts.

To show appreciation for the dedication of the 40 school bus drivers employed by Kobussen in Brodhead, each day at the terminal the drivers will receive a different small gift or participate in an activity, culminating with a party on the morning of Feb. 16 at the Brodhead bus terminal. Many local businesses have donated gift items to help celebrate the drivers.

Community citizens who would like to donate a small gift or card may drop it off at the terminal. Drivers are not in the business for the money: They are in it because of the kids. A simple "Thank you" doesn't cost anything and will be remembered a long time.

The school bus drivers take their jobs seriously and are committed to getting kids to and from school safely. Wisconsinites are invited to recognize school bus drivers in their communities Feb. 12-16, and to consider this important and in-demand career.
