Route 20 Chess Club to host open tourney

FREEPORT - The Route 20 Chess Club will host the Northwest Illinois $5 Open Chess Tournament at Highland Community College on Saturday, Feb. 27.

The tournament is open to all participants, regardless of age or skill level. It will be a four-round Swiss system (non-elimination) tournament, with rounds starting at 10 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3:45 p.m.

Advance registration is recommended; the entry fee will increase to $7 after Feb. 25. Entrants may register from 9 to 9:45 a.m. on the day of the event. The top three players will receive trophies, plus free club membership for one year; there will also be a prize for the top junior player (under 18).

The event will be in the Newell Room (H201D) on the second floor of the Student/Conference Center at HCC, which can be accessed from parking lot A on the north side of campus. There will be a lunch break between the first and second rounds.

The venue is nonsmoking and wheelchair-accessible. Participants who have their own tournament-legal chess sets and clocks are urged to bring them. Computer assistance is not permitted. U.S. Chess Federation rules will be used.
