MONTICELLO - The Monticello Historical Society will hold its August meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Zwingli United Church of Christ lounge, 416 E. Lake Ave.
After a short business meeting, speaker Paul Rieder will give a presentation on family member Ezra Babler, his role in the Spanish-American War, the rifle he carried (which Rieder now owns) and a letter from Babler. Discover how long it took a letter to get from Jacksonville, Florida, to Monticello in 1898, what camp life was like as soldiers prepared for an attack on Cuba and what topics he "wrote home about."
Babler's Springfield Trapdoor rifle will be on display during the presentation.
The public is encouraged to attend the free presentation.
