MADISON - New Glarus native and University of Wisconsin-Madison student Lindsey Durst recently participated in the UW Cycling Team's ninth annual "Freezing for Safety" charity event.

Durst and fellow team members rode bicycles on stationary trainers for 12 hours on the Madison campus, taking donations. The team raised about $1,200 for the Madison Area Safe Kids Coalition, which gives helmets and car seats to underprivileged families in Madison.

The team's appreciation for bicycle helmets and safety runs deep. The team lost one of its own five years ago due to head trauma sustained during a bicycle race.
