MONROE - The Swiss Heritage Series of the Turner Hall of Monroe will hold the second annual raising of the Maibaum at 7 p.m. Friday, May 4 at Turner Hall, 1217 17th Ave.

The European tradition of spring will begin in the Turner Hall Grand Hall with a short concert presented by the Monroe Swiss Singers, the Männerchor New Glarus and Jodlerklub New Glarus. An ancient custom of Germany, especially Bavaria, and still practiced today, a Maibaum, or May Tree, will be raised on Turner Hall's front lawn. The Maibaum is generally raised on May 1 and is related to signs of spring and marriage. Some parts of Switzerland, especially those that border Germany, also observe the custom.

Following the brief concert, the 20-foot tree will be raised by woodsman Richard Horn, Brooklyn, and his crew, accompanied by the sound of alphorns. Decorated with Swiss canton shield flags, the Maibaum will remain in place through the summer months.

The event is open to the public, and free-will donations will be accepted.
