FREEPORT — Vicki Schulz of Stockton, Ill., who has advised Highland Community College students for 18 years, received her 10-year recognition as an advisor from Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). PTK is an international honor society for community college students. 

Schulz was given a pin to honor her commitment to PTK at the June meeting of the Highland Board of Trustees. 

“We at Phi Theta Kappa owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our chapter advisors whose dedicated service is responsible for the success of our local chapters. Advisors are truly the lifeblood of our organization, and we are delighted to recognize them for their years of service,” President and CEO of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Lynn Tincher-Ladner, Ph.D. write in a letter that was read to Schulz.

Schulz said she is honored to be recognized for making a difference in the lives of the students she works with to make sure their experience at Highland carries them to the next chapter in their academic careers. 

Schulz helps guide each student through the college or university scholarship process after graduation from Highland. She also works with them doing community service projects to get them involved with their college, extending that into the surrounding community. 

“One of the best things is when the PTK students go on to get big scholarships,” Schulz wrote. “These students go above and beyond, and when they go on to the next school, I feel like they are ready to become involved in a four-year school setting. That is important. I occasionally hear back from some of the students. Many remember Highland fondly but are moving forward. Many join honor societies at the next school, and to know they had help from Highland means a lot. PTK helps foster fellowship and leadership qualities. My fulfillment is to help broaden the student beyond academics, to create good leadership.”

Our club advisors are passionate about helping students develop their leadership skills and give back to their campus and community. Vicki Schulz has a remarkable record of supporting our students as an advisor to Phi Theta Kappa for 10 years.”
