MONROE - The Monroe Post Office is joining the Department of State in celebrating Passport Day in the USA 2011, a national passport acceptance and outreach event, with a special passport event from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 9 at the Monroe Post Office. The Monroe Post Office will provide passport information to U.S. citizens and accept passport applications.
U.S. citizens must present a valid passport book when entering or re-entering the United States by air. Citizens entering the country from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land borders and seaports of entry must present a passport book, passport card, or other travel documents approved by the U.S. government.
Information on the cost and how to apply for a U.S. passport is available at travel.state.gov. U.S. citizens may also obtain passport information by phone, in English and Spanish, by calling the National Passport Information Center toll-free at (877)487-2778.
The following items when applying: proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate, including a official seal; naturalization certificate, if a naturalized citizen; and one additional form of identification such as current drivers license or state -issued ID card. All applicants must have two photos, available on-site at a cost of $15, and all applicants must appear in person.

Cost for first-time adult applicants are as follows: $110 paid to the State Department for the passport application fee; $25 to the U.S. Postal Service for its processing fee; and $5.60 for Priority Mail with delivery confirmation. For persons under 16, the costs are: $80 to the State Department; $25 to the U.S. Postal Service for its processing fee; and $5.60 for Priority Mail with delivery confirmation. For expedited passport service, add $60 for each application. Cost for passport renewal is $110 for adults.
Two-way overnight delivery is optional. A two- to three-week expedited service is available for an additional fee.
Payment must be made in cash or by personal checks, made out separately to the State Department and the Postal Service.
