MONROE - The Monroe American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 84 will distribute bright red poppies during the annual Poppy Day event on Friday, May 17.

Monroe Unit No. 84 Auxiliary members and veterans will distribute the poppies, handmade by veterans, who receive payment for each poppy made.

Contributions to the poppy program are designated to benefit hospitalized and needy veterans and their families.

In Wisconsin, there are three veterans hospitals located in Madison, Milwaukee and Tomah. At Camp American Legion, near Lake Tomahawk, veterans receive needed therapy and rest. The veterans who use these facilities also receive many items including personal items, treats, stationery, tote bags, tray favors and postage.

In December, the Christmas Gift Shop receives benefits from the poppy program proceeds. Hospitalized veterans can choose Christmas gifts for their families. The gifts are wrapped and shipped, at no cost, to the veterans.

Headquarters for Poppy Day will be at the Monroe American Legion Post Home, 1627 12th Ave. Poppy Day committee members are JoAnn Schwitz, Gladys Schild and Frances Wells.
