The Parkside first grade class created clay pinch pots with a coil on top.
The first step was to squish the clay to get all the air bubbles out. Then they learned how to roll it into a ball with the palm of their hand. This gave the clay a smooth texture. Then they poked their thumb into the ball and practiced “squish, turn, squish, turn” to create their pinch pot. The goal was to have the sides and the bottom of their pot all the same thickness roughly that of their finger. They learned how to roll a clay coil and attach it to the top of their pot using the score and slip method. For some extra flair, they added texture to the top of the pot with various clay tools of their choice. The students worked hard learning about the elements of art and clay.
