Pesticide courses offered

MONROE - All farmers and their employees who load, mix, handle or apply "restricted-use" pesticides must complete a pesticide applicator training course and pass a written exam every five years. University of Wisconsin-Extension in Green County is offering three full-day training sessions, one split-day session and one-test-only session for Green County farmers in 2011.

Approximately 105 Green County producers' certifications will expire before the 2011 crop season and will need to be re-certified. All of the sessions will be held in the Justice Center Multipurpose room, Monroe.

There is a $30 fee for materials and the license per private applicator. Applicators receive a training manual and study guide to help them prepare for the training session and evaluation when registering for the class.

An exam must be taken after completing the classroom session or after a self- study course at home. Those farmers with certifications that have expired before the 2011 cropping season should have received a letter from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture in early December.

The dates and times for 2011 are as follows:

One-day sessions, each from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Wednesday, Jan. 26; Friday, Feb. 18; Thursday, March 3

Split-day sessions, must attend both sessions: Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 8 and 9, 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Test-only session, recommended for those getting recertified: Thursday, Feb. 24, 1 to 3 p.m.
