Parks and Rec programs still open

MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department still has openings in the softball and baseball programs.

New this year are girls softball clinics. Monroe High School coach Joe O'Leksy and staff will be offering this clinic for girls currently in third through eighth grades at the high school gym. Registration is required. The hitting clinic is from 9 to 11 a.m. and the fielding clinic is from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday. The pitching clinic is from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. The fee is $20 for each clinic.

The "Softball with the Cheesemakers" one-day program is open to anyone in third through eighth grades. It will be from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Monday at the MHS main gym. The cost is $10. Players will receive a Campion's Champion T-shirt sponsored by Monroe Kiwanis, Monroe Lions Club and Monroe Morning Optimists. Children can ride any bus from Parkside Elementary School, Northside Elementary School, St. Victor School or the middle school. Children from Abraham Lincoln Elementary School can walk; someone will be there to help them.

Girls softball is a parent-/volunteer-coached program under the direction of the parks and rec department. Parents/volunteers become involved by holding practices and coaching the games. Practices start in May during the week and possibly on weekends, depending on the coaches' preference and availability. Games will be held on Monday nights starting June 5. The fee is $35 for residents and $45 for non-residents. The deadline to register is April 7. Cadet league is for girls entering third and fourth grades in September, junior league is for girls entering fifth and sixth grades, and senior league is for girls entering seventh through ninth grades.

Little league baseball is a parent-/volunteer-coached program under the direction of the Parks and Rec Department. Parents/volunteers become involved by holding practices and coaching the games. The fee is $35 for residents and $45 for non-residents. The deadline to register is April 7. American League is for boys entering third and fourth grades in September, and the National League is for boys entering fifth through seventh grades.

Lassie softball league will be Tuesday nights from June 13 through July 25 at Twining East Park. Girls entering 5K will play from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m., girls entering first grade will play from 6:15 to 7 p.m., and girls entering second grade will play from 7 to 8 p.m. The cost is $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents.

T-Ball is for boys entering 5k in September and will be from 5:15 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays at Recreation Park from June 14 through July 26. The cost is $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents.

Coach pitch minor league is for boys entering first and second grades and will be held at Recreation Park on Wednesdays and Thursdays from June 17 through July 30. Boys entering first grade will meet from 6 to 7 p.m., and boys entering second grade will be from 7 to 8 p.m. The cost is $30 for residents and $40 for non-residents.
